WFA Starter Kit
Why I’m Building a Work From Anywhere (WFA) Setup:
For years, I thought remote work meant staying home. But after sitting out on family trips (mostly to conserve PTO for around the holidays), I realized something:
With the right setup, I can literally work from anywhere.
So I’m testing a full “work from anywhere” setup during an upcoming family road trip — including working from a Honda Pilot, campsites, and wherever else we stop along the way.

The Goal
To maximize PTO time, make the most of travel days, be present for more family experiences – to be able to work from more places with fewer limitations.
- Power: Reliable power is the backbone of this entire setup. My goal is to comfortably get through a full workday without needing to stress about outlets or battery levels.
- EcoFlow Delta 2
- 220w solar panel
- Power strip/surge protector
- Internet: Reliable internet is a must in my line of work, and having 2nd and 3rd fallbacks to Starlink keeps me online.
- Starlink Mini
- Verizon hotspot backup
- Mint Mobile backup
- Vehicle Office Setup: Since I’ll sometimes be working directly from the Honda Pilot, comfort and ergonomics matter more than I originally expected.
- Dell work laptop
- Acer PM1 portable monitor
- Custom silent G305 mouse
- Mechanical silent keyboard
- DIY desk setup: I built a removable DIY desk that mounts to the back of the front seat in the Honda Pilot. It can also convert into a freestanding desk using threaded legs, giving me flexibility depending on where I’m working.
- Comfort & Camping
- Ryobi fan
- Wawona 6 tent
- Nemo Helio XL Portable Shower (22L)
- Go Anywhere portable toilet
- RTIC 52 Qt cooler
- Coffee setup
Organization
Regarding organization, I’m planning to have a designated “tech bag” backpack which will hold everything I need to set up for work (i.e., quick deploy into work mode): laptop, 2nd monitor, Starlink Mini, power cables, and headset.
The EcoFlow Delta 2 and solar panels are too big to store in a backpack; the EcoFlow will most likely be stored in a Home Depot HDX bin when not in use/when we’re driving, and the solar panels came in a nice carrying case.
Battery and Power Expectations
I’m anticipating the EcoFlow Delta 2 will last 1-1.5 workdays depending on solar charging. I plan to recharge it most evenings. I went with the EcoFlow as I can expand it with another battery which will essentially double the capacity. I’m not ready to commit to another battery quite yet and will see how things go with just the single unit.
Long-term Vision
We’re planning a longer trip to the Upper Peninsula later this year. I’m planning to use a mix of PTO days and will be working from anywhere on some days too. Before this WFA setup, I would’ve had to have chosen between family road trip to see extended family and the Upper Peninsula trip with my immediate family. With this WFA setup, I’m hoping to be able to do both!
What I’m Uncertain About
- Summer heat inside the Honda Pilot
- How long the EcoFlow will realistically last
- Whether Starlink Mini will be reliable enough
- Workspace comfort over long sessions
- Managing setup/teardown fatigue
Final Thoughts
The idea of being tied to a single workspace is starting to feel outdated to me.
I’m still figuring this setup out, but if this experiment works, it could completely change how my family and I travel in the future.
